It is organized by the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) and consists of two main events – time trial and road race as well as team time trials since 2012. The inaugural championship was held in 1921, although for the first six years it was considered an amateur race. It wasn’t until 1927 before it was designated a professional race. At that time, there was a men’s professional and amateur race, won by Alfredo Binda and Jean Aerts respectively. The female race was introduced in 1958, with the men’s team time trial introduced in 1962. This event was discontinued later, and men’s individual time trials were added to the championship in 1994. In 2012, the team time trial was reinstated.

The UCI Road World Championship is held around the end of September and follows the Vuelta Espana. It takes place in different European regions on either a flat or hilly course. Along with the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, the Road World Championship forms the Triple Crown of Cycling.

The 2018 UCI Road World Championship will be held in Innsbruck, Austria from 22-30 September. This is the third time the tournament is being held in Austria and the 91st edition of the tournament. Last year’s champion Peter Sagan is among the top favourites for the gold medal after winning the previous 3 years in a row. However, he’s not among the main bookie favourites – Alejandro Valverde is. The Spaniard has never managed to win the road racing world championship, although he was close on a couple of occasions.

Can Valverde Finally Get the Gold Medal?

Alejandro Valverde is among the best road racing cyclist in the world. He’s won the Vuelta Espana in 2009 and other races, although he never managed to win the UCI Road World Championship. He came close on a few occasions, winning the silver medal twice and the bronze an additional 4 times. He’s never been able to get the gold medal, but experts and bookies think that this year will be his.

Valverde’s decorated career is overshadowed by the scandalous doping allegations for which he was suspended from cycling for two years. Once his suspension ended, the Spaniard returned to cycling in 2012 riding for the Movistar Team. This year, he’s being given the highest chances of winning the UCI Road World Championship, being placed ahead of Peter Sagan and other quality cyclists such as Julian Alaphilippe.

Riding for Quick-Step Floors, Alaphilippe may end up raining on Valverde’s parade this year. The Spaniard may be long overdue for a gold medal, but Alaphilippe shouldn’t be underestimated. The Frenchman will surely try and grab any chance he gets, so he should be considered a potential winner and his odds reflect it.

Alaphilippe isn’t too far away from Valverde on the list of favourites, being given odds of 15/4 at Sport Pesa, Fun88, Setanta Bet, and Mansion Bet. This means that the French cyclist can surely mount a title challenge and should be among your top options. His odds are even better than Valverde’s, so why not give him a try?

Adam and Simon Yates Will Jump at Any Chance They Get

Twins Adam and Simon Yates definitely have a bright future ahead of them. Simon Yates surprised everyone by winning this year’s Vuelta Espana, while Adam Yates has had noticeable results at many events, including winning the 2015 Clasica de San Sebastian ahead of 2014 champion and main favourite Alejandro Valverde.

Simon Yates’s Vuelta win has made the British cyclist one of the major favourites for the UCI World Championship this year. He’s considered a third favourite right behind Valverde and Alaphilippe, while his twin brother is placed behind him with only slightly worse odds. It’s clear that the British twins are the future of cycling and if any of them ends up winning the road racing world championship, they’ll make fans and punters very happy.

Peter Sagan’s Chances

Peter Sagan is a Slovak cyclist and widely considered one of the biggest road racing talents. After winning the Junior Mountain Bike World Championship 2008, Slovak moved to road cycling, winning a number of classics. He won the points classification in the Tour de France this year, making him one of the best cyclists at the moment.

Sagan has won the UCI World Championship 3 times in a row – in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Following his 2017 UCI Road World Championship title, Sagan will wear the pink jersey in 2018 for a third consecutive season which hasn’t happened before. Sagan and his team Bora-Hansgrohe were among the top favourites for the 2018 UCI Road World Championship, but at the moment, they’ve lost their footing.

Sagan’s odds are pretty unfavourable at 33/1 at Mansion Bet, Setanta Bet, Sport Pesa, and Fun88. The Slovak cyclist shares the odds with other road racers such as Daniel Martin and Romain Bardet, which makes it obvious that he’s not a major favourite. His odds are too high for him to be considered a punter’s favourite. However, the man did win the last three road world championships, so maybe he should be taken a consideration. At the very least, he deserves a higher place on the list.

LONDON (Reuters) - Six iconic velodromes will host the inaugural UCI Track Champions League next year as part of cycling's governing body the UCI's revamp of the season.

First announced in March as a World League taking place in 2021 and 2022, the new format will instead be staged over six successive weekends at the end of next year.

The UCI, in partnership with broadcaster Eurosport, hope the Champions League featuring the world's best sprint and endurance riders will help expand track cycling's global TV fanbase outside of its traditional following.

'From November to December 2021, the UCI Track Champions League will bring together the world's best sprinters and endurance specialists over six closely spaced weekends in short formats,' UCI President David Lappartient said in a statement.

'The new track competition promises to bring a breath of fresh air to a historic discipline of our sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.'

Each of the six events at as yet unspecified venues will last around two hours and feature four disciplines for men and women -- individual sprint, keirin, elimination race and scratch race.

The nine best-placed riders in individual sprint and keirin, as well as all medallists of bunch races at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Turkmenistan in October will gain selection for the UCI Champions League.

Athletes will be kitted out in jerseys inspired by their national flags, while the reigning world champions for the events will wear rainbow jerseys.

British sprint king Chris Hoy and German track great Kristina Vogel will act as ambassadors for the new event.

'The vision is an exciting one: to create a race that is not only going to be an amazing sporting spectacle, but that will draw track cyclists from across over the world to take on the ultimate high stakes challenge,' two-time Olympic champion Vogel said.
